PHL and Idexx Laboratories have joined together to make this Autogenous Vaccine Sample Collection Kit available for easy collection and submission of samples for isolation.
When you have an animal with an abscess, you can have a collection kit sent to you. To order a kit, just call our toll-free number, 1-877-566-7722, and we'll have a kit shipped to you FedEx. You, or your vet, will be required to obtain a sample by lancing an abscess (the older the abscess, the better) and rubbing the tip of the collection swab in the pus portion of the abscess. Or, you can use a large bore needle to obtain a sample of pus and then transfer it to the collection swab. Follow the other instructions inside the kit and make sure to fill out the form enclosed within the kit. Then, call the numbers provided to request a FedEx pick-up and to alert Idexx of the tracking number, and that's all there is to it. By the way, the instructions tell you to call an 800 number to contact Idexx and to choose option 5. Make sure to choose option 5 and no other options (if you choose another option, you will reach someone who is not connected with this project, and they will not be able to assist you). The cost for the collection kit, including shipping it to and from you, as well as isolation of the organism and its delivery to our lab, is $98. Please understand that if your sample tests negative for CL, and we therefore cannot produce a vaccine for you, you still will be charged $98 for the kit and test. Idexx will isolate the organism within 11 days and deliver it to our laboratories at PHL. We will then produce the vaccine within 4-6 weeks and send it to you.
Of course, rather than use our kit, you may choose to have your veterinarian arrange for the collection and isolation of a sample. In that case, ask to have the isolate shipped to PHL laboratories (call us for shipping information).
