ANAVAC is a live anaplasmosis vaccine. It stimulates immunity in cattle by simulating the natural infection, but without causing clinical disease. Anavac has been tested under laboratory and field conditions in the United States, Columbia, and Brazil. It has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing clinical anaplasmosis in cattle. Four to five weeks after inoculation the modified anaplasma can be detected in approximately 0.5 to eight percent of the peripheral erythrocytes with a hematocrit decrease usually between five to twenty percent of the preinoculation PCV value depending on the age of the animal. These manifestations are transitory for one to two weeks. Such a reaction indicates infection with the modified anaplasma has occurred which is necessary to produce immunity. Complement-fixation antibodies are found in 95 percent of the animals by the fifth week following vaccination.
ANAVAC may be used:
• in all breeds of cattle
• in cattle between one and twelve months of age with 6-10 months being the ideal vaccination period
General Precautions
• Vaccinate only healthy animals. Cattle showing anemia from any cause, respiratory infection, enteritis, exhaustion from travel, or other medical problems should be allowed to return to normal before vaccination.
• Cattle are not considered fully immune until six weeks after vaccination.
• Cattle should be vaccinated in advance of transportation into infected areas whenever possible.
• If cattle are in anaplasma zones, control of ticks and other vectors is essential during the period of developing immunity.
• The anaplasma organism is susceptible to tetracyclines, therefore, do not use these drugs from one week before to six weeks following vaccination. After six weeks have passed following vaccination, tetracyclines may be used again.
• Antibiotics such as penicillin, streptomycin, or sulfa drugs may be used.
• As with all biologic materials, an anaphylactic type reaction can occur. If so, treat with epinephrine or atropine as indicated.
• Use a separate sterile needle for each animal. Do not use chemically sterilized syringes and needles.
Vaccination of Cattle
• Young animals between one month and 12 months of age may be vaccinated while observing the general precautions listed above.
• Animals older than twelve months may react to the vaccine showing symptoms similar to field anaplasmosis. Because of this possibility, we do not recommend vaccinating animals over twelve months of age. These reactions, if they occur, are due principally to anemia and may result in serious illness and even death in heavily stressed animals. Any vaccination of animals older than twelve months should be done under the supervision of a licensed and accredited veterinarian.
• Export cattle - Vaccination with ANAVAC produces a humoral antibody which is indistinguishable from exposure to field anaplasmosis. A positive CF test may result in disqualification of cattle for interstate movement in some states or export to some countries. If cattle are to be shipped out of California be certain those animals will be eligible for entry at the intended destination before vaccination takes place.
How ANAVAC is Supplied, Stored and Used
Please place your order 2-3 days in advance of the desired shipping date. Unless you plan on storing the vaccine in liquid nitrogen, you should plan to have it shipped when you can use it within three days after arrival. ANAVAC is shipped in a styrofoam container, along with a special diluent, on dry ice. Once the vaccine arrives, it may be held in the refrigerator at 4 degrees centigrade (39 degrees F), or lower, on wet ice for up to three days. The diluent should be stored in the cupboard, rather than refrigerated, to prevent crystals from forming. For longer storage, the vaccine may be held on dry ice (the dry ice must be continually replaced to prevent it from evaporating) for up to one month or it can be stored in liquid nitrogen indefinitely.
The vaccine is prepared for use by adding the thawed vaccine to the bottle containing the diluent. The diluted vaccine is thoroughly mixed by gentle shaking. The immunizing dose is 2 ml administered intramuscularly. Caution: Dilute only enough vaccine at one time to vaccinate the cattle being handled. Keep all unused and diluted vaccine on ice. Protect from sunlight and heat. Do not use chemically sterilized syringes and needles.
ANAVAC has no "withdrawal period".
